What is a possible motivation for Amos’ words in verses 3-8?

3 “Do two walk together, unless they have agreed to meet?

It is possible that the people of Israel were so surprised by Amos’ message of judgment that they protested his words: how could the Lord come in judgment against his own people? Amos’ words in Amos 3:3–8 seem to suggest that he is responding to such a protest and confirming that he is a prophet who has really been sent by God.
