What is remarkable about the expression “a male child”?

Revelation 12:5 (ESV)

5 She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne,

The Greek first says plainly that the woman bore a son, and then adds a second term, a male. The effect of placing these two terms side by side is to emphasize the child’s gender. By the ordinance of God, leadership within the human race should come from men (see Genesis 2:15, Genesis 2:18; Genesis 3:9). Further, the Lord had also explicitly promised that the Redeemer would be male (2 Samuel 7:14; Isaiah 7:14; Micah 5:2–5). The child born to the woman is the fulfillment of the Old Testament promise. That’s also why the dragon is determined to devour him.
