Revelation 12:1–17 and Revelation 13:1–18 tell us of three hellish beasts: the dragon (Satan), the beast from the sea (the anti-God attitude latent in every human heart), and the beast from the earth. Revelation 14:1–20 will introduce us to a fourth animal, the Lamb. He will be presented as victorious, with the full number of “her offspring…those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus” (Revelation 12:17) gathered with him on Mount Zion. Despite the fury of the dreadful dragon and his hellish alliances, he will not be able to snatch from the Lord’s hands a single one for whom the Lamb has died (John 10:28)—for he is defeated from the start (Revelation 12:8). This wider context gives encouragement to the readers of the present paragraph.
11 Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon.
