The text tells us that Joseph was aware that his life would end soon. He did not deny that. He exercised faith and thought about God’s redemption. He knew that God would redeem all his children, body and soul. That gave him hope. And that made him order practical things to show that hope—he wanted to travel with God’s people to the promised land. There Jesus died for us to give us life, body and soul. We have seen a lot more of God’s way of redemption in Jesus’ death and resurrection. We have a better hope (in the new covenant).
22 By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones.
