What is meant by "the world"?

1 John 5:5 (ESV)

5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

This is the totality of all powers opposed to God that make obedience difficult. This can also be defined in terms of moral pressure, the persuasion of societies’ outlook and standards, and the preoccupations of a godless society. It also incorporates the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (1 John 2:16), which can also be described as a sinful life. It can also include heresies and persecutions.1 Thus, sin is very much a part of this “world.”
