Hebron (previously called Kiriath Arba) was the place where Sarah had died many years earlier (Genesis 23:2). It would later also be specified as a Levitical possession (Joshua 21:13) and become King David’s first capital (2 Samuel 2:11). It was located in the territory of Judah south of Jerusalem, indeed, in Judges 1:9–10 the conquest of Hebron is credited to the men of Judah.
13 Then Joshua blessed him, and he gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance.
