In 1 Corinthians 9:24–27 Paul gives a final encouragement to the Corinthians to follow his example by committing themselves wholly to the service of Christ. He does this by comparing the Christian life with the world of sports. Sport was an important part of life in Corinth. A great sports event, the Isthmian Games, was held every two years in the city’s territory.
The traditional 192-metre race (which was referred to as the stadion) was a highlight of the Games. Of course, only one runner could win first place, a fact that inspired every runner to give his best. With equal eagerness and dedication, the believer should give his very best in the service of God.
24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.
