Riches form no basis for lasting trust. Material things are lifeless objects unable to sustain a living soul. Thus the one relying on riches leans on a dead and decaying reed which eventually will collapse, letting that person fall. But righteousness is a living force coming from the living Lord. It is ascribed to us, then given to us to sanctify us, as the very likeness of Christ is formed in our characters. In this way the righteous will flourish forever, with increasing vitality. Psalm 1:1–6 is a good commentary on this proverb.
28 Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.
