God’s grace is most clearly revealed in Joshua 24:2 where a brief mention is made of the fact that Abraham served other gods. Before the Lord revealed himself to Abram and took him from beyond the River, he was a pagan. He was a man who would have worshipped many different gods. From this we should realize that Abram was not chosen by God because of anything good within him. There was nothing about Abram that made him deserving of God’s love, as if he sought the Lord where everyone around him did not. No, he was dead in his sins and transgressions, blind to the things of God, and deserving only his wrath. He served idols and yet he was chosen by God. God’s choice was completely out of grace.
2 And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘Long ago, your fathers lived beyond the Euphrates, Terah, the father of Abraham and of Nahor; and they served other gods.
