Habakkuk 2:5 (ESV)

5 “Moreover, wine is a traitor, an arrogant man who is never at rest. His greed is as wide as Sheol; like death he has never enough. He gathers for himself all nations and collects as his own all peoples.”

An Arrogant People

The evil of the Babylonians (Habakkuk 2:4) becomes visible in their deeds. They overindulged themselves in consuming much wine which was like a traitor that betrayed them, causing them to be arrogant and restless and behave in an unseemly way.

Greed dominated their lives to such an extent that their appetite for possessing things was described as wide as Sheol. It was compared to the place of the dead because their hunger for enriching themselves was never filled. They never had enough; therefore, they continually sought to satisfy themselves with wanting to gain more for themselves from their victims. They took them captive to satisfy their greed but despite this they lived unfilled, empty, and unhappy lives.
