1. Revelation 15:8 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Of what significance is the addition of the phrase “the glory of”?

Revelation 15:8 (ESV)

8 and the sanctuary was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the sanctuary until the seven plagues of the seven angels were finished.

John could have written that the sanctuary was filled with smoke from God, that is, from the fires of his wrath in those bowls. The addition of the phrase “the glory of” highlights that the fires of God’s righteous judgment (which generates the smoke) are precisely what is glorious about God. God is a “just” God (Revelation 15:3), and so sin must be punished (eternal fires of hell), if not upon the sinner himself then upon his Substitute. That the Lord has given a Lamb as a substitute (his only Son!) is his glory.
