Judges 9:11 (ESV)

11 But the fig tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my sweetness and my good fruit and go hold sway over the trees?’

The fruit (sweetness) of the fig could be eaten fresh, made into cakes or fig wine, and used as a sweetener.1
