Luke 6:42 (ESV)

42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

A man may have a speck in his eye, but no log. This is an Eastern figure of speech (the great exaggeration) to make something very clear. If you have not taken the teachings of Jesus to heart and yet think you notice something in someone else, this is not good, because you are, then, an actor, that is a hypocrite. (“Actor” is the literal translation.) Anyone dependent on God’s goodness revealed in Jesus Christ will lovingly extend a helping hand to others in extreme humility. You are, then, a good guide and a recognizable follower of your teacher, Jesus.
