Daniel 8:14 (ESV)

14 And he said to me, “For 2,300 evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary shall be restored to its rightful state.”

Here we read the response. It will last for 2,300 evenings and mornings. Why are they talking about 2,300 evenings and mornings? In Exodus 29:1–46 the Lord prescribes a sacrifice every evening and every morning. This is how the service in the temple begins and concludes. The total of the evenings and mornings this will not happen is 2,300. This means that the service in the temple will not continue for 1,150 days. When we now compare what Daniel is saying in regard to what happens about 380 years later, when Antiochus Epiphanes rules over Israel, we note that the sacrificial service is actually discontinued for 1,150 days. When there has been no sacrifice in the temple for 1,150 days, the rebellion led by Judas the Maccabean results in the liberation of Jerusalem. The sacrificial service then starts up again on December 25, 164 BC! The ministry of atonement is restored. It is beautiful to see that it is the Lord who governs and fulfills his prophecy. He does not abandon the work of his hands. He makes sure that Antiochus Epiphanes does no more evil.
