Daniel sees how a king will rage in the house of God by throwing truth to the ground. It is Antiochus Epiphanes who destroys the scrolls on which the books of the Bible are written as much as he is able to and then he has an altar erected for Zeus. This is how truth is treated as worthless and thrown aside.
The Lord rules, and therefore things do not stay this way. He does not abandon what he has made. He is in control and ensures that Antiochus Epiphanes could do no more. Suddenly Antiochus dies. No one has killed him. The Lord shows his power. He is the King of kings. He rules over life and death. He is the only God. He who exalts himself will be humbled.
Daniel is instructed to seal up this vision, to keep it as a secret for now. The time when all of this will happen is still in the future. Yet the Lord has seen to it that this vision becomes known among his people. He makes sure that when these terrible things actually happen his people will not become desperate and despondent. He takes care that they will not think that the Lord has abandoned them or that he does not hold history in his hand. Even when the daily sacrifices are stopped in the temple, by means of this vision they could be assured that the Lord lives. He has already told them that these things will happen, right down to the details. In the same way, Christ has given us the book of Revelation so that even in the greatest misery for people –and especially for God’s people– we may know that the Lord is King and that his goal will certainly be achieved one day. We have the prospect of the new heaven and earth. There his saints will live, without sin and misery, to his glory.
26 The vision of the evenings and the mornings that has been told is true, but seal up the vision, for it refers to many days from now.”
