God’s gift of a substitute sacrifice

Zephaniah 1:7–13 (ESV)

7 Be silent before the Lord GOD! For the day of the LORD is near; the LORD has prepared a sacrifice and consecrated his guests.

The Lord’s war against sin is a sacrifice (Zephaniah 1:7). “Similarly, at the cross, God’s war against evil manifested itself in his cursing Christ on behalf of the elect (Isaiah 53:11; Galatians 3:13)…. And, by his substitutionary act of love, Christ secured our right standing with God (Romans 5:1, Romans 5:18–19)."1 That leaves the believer fearless in the day of the Lord’s wrath.
