2 Peter is an encouragement for God’s church to continue persevering in the Christian life on the basis of God’s promises. He wants us to know that God’s promises are sure so that we will give ourselves to good works rather than indulging our sinful desires. We must not be taken in by those who say there is no judgment and therefore we may live as we please.
This sermon from 2 Peter will serve to explain why there has been such a long delay in Christ’s return whilst at the same time encouraging believers not to allow this delay to turn their hearts and minds toward sin. Shed light on the motives and objections of those who deny the reality of future judgment. It will be good to emphasize that no one knows when Christ will return. You should also explain how the heavens and earth will be transformed when Christ comes and that all evil deeds will be exposed. Given this reality we must be reconciled to God before it is too late. There will be no time for repentance when Christ returns.
8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
