Sermon goal for 2 Peter 2:4-10

2 Peter 2:4–10 (ESV)

4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment;

2 Peter is an encouragement for God’s church to continue persevering in the Christian life on the basis of God’s promises. He wants us to know that God’s promises are sure, so that we will give ourselves to good works rather than indulging our sinful desires. We must not be taken in by those who say there is no judgment and therefore we may live as we please.

This sermon from 2 Peter 1—3 will give you a chance to explain how we are made right in God’s sight, along with affirming that judgment is coming on all those who reject Christ. Given Peter’s reference to events from the Old Testament, you will also want to explain how these events demonstrate God’s justice and the way of salvation. Finally, your sermon seeks to encourage believers not to despair and give up the Christian faith when they see the ungodly prosper, but to know that God’s judgment will certainly come. As a result, instead of following the ways of the world by indulging our sinful natures, let us strive to be godly, following in the footsteps of Christ.
