2 Peter is an encouragement for God’s church to continue persevering in the Christian life on the basis of God’s promises. He wants us to know that God’s promises are sure so that we will give ourselves to good works rather than indulging our sinful desires. We must not be taken in by those who say there is no judgment and therefore we may live as we please.
The next sermon on 2 Peter should shed light on the motives and objections of those who deny the reality of future judgment. Though their reasoning might seem to be persuasive, it is based on a desire to justify sinful actions and it ignores the testimony of Scripture. Along with explaining Peter’s arguments, it would also be a good idea to confirm and expand on what the Bible teaches regarding the return of Christ. What does it mean for the earth to be reserved for fire? Why can Christians be confident that they will not be destroyed along with the ungodly? Why is the right thinking about the return of Christ so important? What does Peter want us to do?
