Peter asks a question in order to encourage those who read his letter to reflect on how the certainty of judgment ought to influence the choices we make today. Elsewhere in the New Testament we also see how Christian ethics (the standard of our daily living) is rooted in biblical teaching regarding the end times and the return of Christ (Mark 13:32–37; Romans 13:12; 1 Corinthians 15:58; Ephesians 5:11–13; Philippians 4:5; Colossians 4:5; 1 Thessalonians 5:1–11; 2 Timothy 4:1–2; James 5:8–9; 1 Peter 1:13–17; 1 Peter 4:7; 1 John 2:28).1
