Sermon Goal of 2 Peter 3:14-18

2 Peter 3:14–18 (ESV)

14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.

2 Peter is an encouragement for God’s church to continue persevering in the Christian life on the basis of God’s promises. He wants us to know that God’s promises are sure so that we will give ourselves to good works rather than indulge our sinful desires. We must not be taken in by those who say there is no judgment and therefore we may live as we please.

This sermon on 2 Peter is an opportunity to draw together themes from the whole letter and finish with a final encouragement to guard and grow. In particular you will be able to comment on how God’s promises have the power to change us now so that we can pursue holiness. You can also share some information about the formation of the New Testament and why we must be careful when we read the Bible. Finally, you should reflect on what it will mean for God’s church to be on their guard and to grow. Give practical examples.
