Daniel 11:9 (ESV)

9 Then the latter shall come into the realm of the king of the south but shall return to his own land.

Then a time of rest will come for the north through a new king. But this Syrian king does not leave it at that. He advances with his army against Egypt. He even enters Egypt. Yet the Egyptian army crushes him. He has to return to his own country in defeat.

We see that up to this point, Egypt is the strongest power around Israel. This was the situation from approximately 300 to 200 BC. After that, things change.
