What does the burnt offering refer to?

Leviticus 1:3 (ESV)

3 “If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he shall offer a male without blemish. He shall bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting, that he may be accepted before the LORD.

This specific type of offering was not normally the first offering to be made by a worshipper who came to the sanctuary. However, it is listed first because the burnt offering was one of the most frequently made sacrifices. The burnt offering was a reminder that believers must continually confess their sins to the Lord. The burnt offering was the only offering that belongs completely to the Lord. No portion of the animal was eaten by the priests or worshippers. Instead, the entire animal was burnt on the altar.
