In Acts 2:42 we are presented with four key elements that characterized the early Christian gatherings: a devotion to apostolic teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and the prayers. Most likely this is a summary of what took place at each worship service when the church officially gathered for worship. As further evidence consider Justin Martyr’s description of a worship gathering taking place around 150 AD (First Apology, 67). He mentions the memoirs of the apostles,
prayers,
bread,
and an explanation of what is done to care for those not present (fellowship).
42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
