The apostles’ teaching is everything which the apostles taught regarding Jesus and our response to him. Most probably the apostles’ actual teaching took place during a worship service1 with a pattern similar to that found in a synagogue. This would involve a reading from the Law or Prophets followed by a sermon.2 Their sermon would include ethical and practical instruction.3 With the apostles having passed away and having laid the foundation of the church (Ephesians 2:20), the New Testament books are now a record of the apostolic teaching. They are used by God to nurture and build up his church in every generation.4
42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
