An encouragement to confess sin
Explain: what are the two big ideas that Samuel seeks to convey in his speech?
Explain: how is confession of sin an ongoing reality for God’s people?
Explain: who interceded on behalf of Israel? Who intercedes on our behalf today?
Gratitude driven obedience

Explain: how should we respond to the forgiveness of God in Christ?
Apply: give some examples of how forgiveness can set us free. Encourage God’s people not to wallow in sin and self-pity.
Explain/Apply: marvel at the wonder of God’s grace whilst at the same time emphasizing that it is not a licence for sin.
Prayer of response
Heavenly Father, we thank you that your mercies are new every morning and that we can come to you when we have sinned and know that, for the sake of Christ your Son, you will not cast us out. Help us to come to you in those times when our pride would stop us, when we think we must first earn a place in your good books before we can reach out to you in prayer. Work in us by your Spirit to show us where sin remains, so that we will not be content with our existing patterns of behaviour and habits, but eager to change. May we walk in your ways more and more and in the freedom and joy that comes from knowing our sins have been forgiven. We pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
1 And Samuel said to all Israel, “Behold, I have obeyed your voice in all that you have said to me and have made a king over you.
