Jesus redeemed those who were under the law by perfectly obeying the law in their place and suffering the punishment which they deserve for their disobedience (Galatians 3:13–14).1 By taking the curse that lawbreakers deserve upon himself, he frees from the curse (judgment) those who are deserving of the curse.2 Liberation for sinners comes at the cost of Jesus’ life.
