Joshua 10:15 suggests that after Israel attacked the Gibeonites, they went back to their camp. This is surprising given that Joshua 10:16 mentions them finding the Amorite kings in the cave at Makkedah (a long way from Gilgal). Would they really head back to camp only to then go all the way to Makkedah? Davis suggests that the author of Joshua mentions the return to Gilgal in order to close off one section of narrative from the next. The real return to Gilgal only took place in Joshua 10:43.1
15 So Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
