1 Samuel 22:6–23 (ESV)

6 Now Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men who were with him. Saul was sitting at Gibeah under the tamarisk tree on the height with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him.

  • What does 1 Samuel 22:6-23 reveal about who God is (Father)?

  • The LORD is sovereign. The evil designs of Doeg and Saul are used to advance his purposes of judgement against the house of Eli.

  • The LORD is working all things for good. Through his King he provides refuge from his wrath and will bring justice to his enemies.

What does 1 Samuel 22:6-23 reveal about what God does in my place and on my behalf (Son)?

  • Jesus Christ is the King who was subjected to an unfair trial and killed on trumped up charges. He is the only truly innocent man who ever lived and died. In his life, he was perfectly obedient to God and did not therefore deserve death but eternal life with god in glory. In his death, he bore the wrath of God against the sins of God’s people. Now, having been raised from the dead, he can offer refuge to those who come to him. Refuge from the wrath to come when he returns in judgement and destroys all those opposed to God.

What does 1 Samuel 22:6-23 reveal about what God does in me and through me (Holy Spirit)?

  • God the Holy Spirit helps me to trust God and his promises, to remain loyal to him even when my life is on the line. He encourage me to know that not a hair can fall unless my Father wills it and that all creatures are completely in God’s hand.[2]
