One God in three persons

1 Samuel 27:1–12 (ESV)

1 Then David said in his heart, “Now I shall perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will despair of seeking me any longer within the borders of Israel, and I shall escape out of his hand.”

What does 1 Samuel 27 reveal about who God is (Father)?

  • The LORD is sovereign. He protects and looks after David even when he is in enemy territory. He grants him success in his endeavours.

  • The LORD may use deception in his judgement of his enemies.

What does 1 Samuel 27 reveal about what God does in my place and on my behalf (Son)?

  • Jesus Christ is the King who was exiled from the presence of the Father’s goodness as a result of the sins of God’s people. He bore the wrath of God and knew nothing but God’s wrath on the cross. As a result of his obedience and loyalty to God, he has the right to an inheritance in the new creation.

What does 1 Samuel 27 reveal about what God does in me and through me (Holy Spirit)?

  • God the Holy Spirit unites me to Christ so that his death and exile is considered my death, and his inheritance in the new creation is one which I can also claim. Having worked a true faith in my heart, he helps me to be shrewd in my service to Christ. To make good use of the resources that I’ve been given, to be wise in my conversations and evangelism efforts.
