1. Hebrews 11:6 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

How do some of the other verbs in this verse clarify the meaning of “faith”?

Hebrews 11:6 (ESV)

6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Faith is important to please God. Faith begins when you want to draw near to God (see the same word in Hebrews 4:16; Hebrews 10:22). And when you go to the Lord in faith, two things are important. The first is that you believe that he is and exists as the only living God. Faith is personal. You do not believe in something; you believe in Someone. He is and he acts according to what he said about himself in Exodus 3:14.

The second important thing in faith is that God rewards those who seek him (Hebrews 10:35). To seek the Lord means that you want a relationship with him, that you like to walk with him. And the reward is that you experience him as your God now and for ever. To know God is to live forever (see John 17:3). That is our reward.
