What does 2 Peter 1:12-15 reveal about what God does in and through me (the work of the Holy Spirit)? By his Spirit, Christ empowers me to remember. He helps me to realize that in the gospel I have already been given all the resources I need for godly living (2 Peter 1:3–4) so that I do not go looking for something new.
I do not need a special experience of the Spirit or a special revelation on a mountain in order to serve Christ.
The Spirit also helps me to realize that remembering is ongoing. He works in my heart as God’s truth is proclaimed to me—taking old truths and making them alive to me once again. He also shows me the areas in my life which require change.
Finally, the Spirit helps me to fight against sin. Remembering involves obedience to God’s commandments and the Spirit empowers me to say no
to sin and yes
to what is good and right (see Titus 2:11–14). He also comforts me in this fight by assuring me of God’s call and election through my obedience (2 Peter 1:10). A godly life is not the earning of salvation but evidence that salvation truly belongs to me.1
12 Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have.
