2 Peter 2:10–16 (ESV)

10 and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority.Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones,

What does 2 Peter 2:10b-16 reveal about what God does in my place and on my behalf (the work of the Son)? Nothing specific is said of Christ in this passage. However, we can affirm that he cares for his people and wants them to know how to recognize false teachers as well as the destruction that is coming upon them. Since they have left the straight way, they will perish. For those, however, who trust in Christ, those who remain on the straight way living in relationship with him, there will not be destruction. Christ is the good Shepherd who has laid down his life for the sheep (John 10:11) and he guards those sheep by means of further instruction (i.e., Peter’s letter). Even though we deserve the same judgment as the heretics because we have also broken God’s law (rejecting authority, lusting after money and sex), we can be forgiven because Christ has died in our place and Christ has perfectly kept God’s law on our behalf.
