One God in three persons

1 Samuel 29:1–11 (ESV)

1 Now the Philistines had gathered all their forces at Aphek. And the Israelites were encamped by the spring that is in Jezreel.

What does 1 Samuel 29 reveal about who God (the Father) is?

  • The LORD is sovereign. He providentially intervenes to ensure that David does not fight in the battle against Saul.

  • The LORD is living. He is at work in the lives of his people, changing them and letting them grow them in godliness.

What does 1 Samuel 29 reveal about what God (the Son) does in my place and on my behalf?

  • Jesus Christ is the King in whom no fault was found. The only man who never did anything wrong and perfectly obeyed all of God’s commandments. He was a true and righteous man. As a result of his righteousness, he was able to pay the penalty on behalf of sinners. Only one who has no sin to pay for himself can pay for the sins of others.

What does 1 Samuel 29 reveal about what God (the Holy Spirit) does in me and through me?

  • God the Holy Spirit helps me to honour Jesus in my daily conduct in the place where I live and work. He changes my desires so that I now want to walk in the ways of my king (cf. Ephesians 2:10). He also strengthens me for obedience, especially in those times where it is difficult and costly.
