One God in three persons

1 Samuel 26:1–25 (ESV)

1 Then the Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah, saying, “Is not David hiding himself on the hill of Hachilah, which is on the east of Jeshimon?”

What does 1 Samuel 26 reveal about who God is (Father)?1.

  • The LORD is sovereign. He keeps his servant safe from Saul and his army by placing a deep sleep upon them. He appoints his king and removes him in his time.

  • The LORD is just. He will bring vengeance against those who do wrong.

  • The LORD rewards. Under the terms of the old covenant, the LORD promised blessing for obedience (cf. Deuteronomy 28).

What does 1 Samuel 26 reveal about what God does in my place and on my behalf (Son)?

  • Jesus Christ is the King who was loyal to God and his people. He obeyed God’s law in all its requirements and submitted to the will of the Father. He helped and cared for those who opposed him, even giving his life as a ransom to pay for their (and my) sin.

What does 1 Samuel 26 reveal about what God does in me and through me (Holy Spirit)?

  • God the Holy Spirit encourages my heart with the truth of my King’s loyalty. In doing so he motivates me to pursue costly obedience in my Christian walk.
