The wide gate refers to a course of life that does not align with Jesus’ teaching.1 Generally, if your desire is to please men and win the praise of your compatriots then you will not seek to submit to Christ and go against the grain of your culture/society.2 In context, Jesus is speaking in a time where most Jewish people believed that they were sure of God’s favour because of their genetic link with and descent from Abraham (Matthew 3:9).3
