We should notice that the imperative (command) to make every effort is repeated—once in 2 Peter 1:5 and once again in 2 Peter 1:10. Peter is adamant that Christian believers should work hard at growing in moral character. Growth in godliness is thus not something that simply happens to us; it requires effort and sacrifice. It requires discipline and dedication. We put in a lot of effort when it comes to spending time in the gym, at work, in the home, or at school—we need the same effort when it comes to growing in godliness.
