1. 2 Peter 3:9 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What promise is Peter referring to?

2 Peter 3:9 (ESV)

9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

The promise in view is that of Christ’s coming (2 Peter 3:4) along with its attendant judgment (2 Peter 3:7, 2 Peter 3:10, 2 Peter 3:12) and the promise of a new world (2 Peter 3:13).1 The claim (made by false teachers) that God was slow shows that they have not realized that divine time is not human time.2 Their criticism is actually an honour challenge made against God as if human beings (with their limited lifespans) can truly judge whether or not God is delaying.3
